Oilers have been to three finals of the National Sevens Circuit thus far.
Menengai Oilers are on the cusp of history as they only need to get to the final of the Kakamega 7s to assure themselves of a maiden National Sevens Circuit title win with head coach Gibson Weru admitting it will boost their Kenya Cup chances.
Oilers claimed their first ever major trophy by beating Strathmore Leos in the Prinsloo 7s last week to shoot to the summit of the circuit log with a four points buffer against reigning champions KCB RFC.
Speaking to Mozzart Sport, Weru noted that a title win will be a reward for years of work and will definitely be a massive boost in their quest for lifting a first ever Kenya Cup.
"If we win, it will be a culmination of six years of hard work, we have reached six finals before Prinsloo, in 2017 we reached our first ever final before two other finals in 2019 and two finals this year before Prinsloo.
It will give the players a lot of confidence, believing that they can compete at the high level and be able to win. My goal has been to always make Oilers a Championship side, if we win it will definitely give us confidence to win the Kenya Cup," said Weru.
Oilers got to the final of the Kenya Cup in 2022 after staging a massive upset against KCB in the semis and despite a spirited performance they eventually lost to Kabras RFC.
Weru added that Oilers are under no pressure to win the Circuit with the crown in their own hands as they have a four points buffer atop.
"We are not under any pressure what so ever, the best thing is that we have destiny in our own hands, our goal is to take a game at a time which we did today and we need to build up on that tomorrow.
We will do the best we can to make sure we can be in the best possible position to win, we cannot look past the quarters and we cannot look past the series all though we are supposed to have one eye on that," added Weru.
