Tenth place finish for Shujaa in Vancouver

Teams ranked 12th, 13th, and 14th following the World Series in Toulouse will compete in a four-team relegation playoff with the 2023 Challenger Series winners in Toulouse.

National 7s side, Shujaa registered an improved performance in Vancouver, finishing in 10th position, after losing 35-17 to Samoa in the ninth place final early Monday 6 March, morning.

The Damian McGrath’s charges lost all their pool matches against Fiji (31-12), Great Britain (26-12), and Uruguay (21-19).

They would, however, bounce back to winning ways and defeat their fellow Africans South Africa 17-12 in the ninth-place quarter-finals before holding off Spain 24-14 in the semis.

Shujaa remain in 13th position with 29 points, an improvement from the last leg where they only picked a point. With only four rounds left, Shujaa will be keen to amass maximum points to avoid relegation.


How relegation will be decided

The 15th ranked core team based on accumulated Series points following the tenth round in Toulouse will be relegated.

The relegation playoff will be a round-robin format, with the top two teams advancing to the final. The winner will be the 12th core team on the 2024 World Rugby Challenger Series, while the other three teams will compete in their respective Regional Sevens Championships to qualify for the 2024 World Rugby Challenger Series.

New Zealand are the current World Series leaders with 120 points while Argentina follow closely at second position with 108 points. France, Fiji, and Australia sum up the top five teams.

The next leg of the World Series will be Hong Kong 7s that will be held on 31 March to 2 April.
