Rugby 15s fans have every reason to smile as the highly anticipated 2024 Impala Floodlit Tournament dates have been announced.

The tournament will kick off on Saturday 19 October starting with the thrilling quarterfinal stage before the battle heads to the semifinal stage on Saturday 26 October. The competition will culminate on Saturday 2 November when the finals will be staged.

KCB Rugby are the defending champions having secured a narrow 25-23 win over Nondies RFC in extra time last year to clinch their 10th title.

The victory saw them overtake Mean Machine who had nine titles. They also made history as the first team to win the Floodies title five times in a row.

Heading to the final match, the Bankers had won the last four editions while Nondies were making back-to-back final appearances with their last title coming back in 2012.

The Bankers landed the opener through center Peter Kilonzo and Darwin Mukidza converted for a 7-0 lead.

Two successive penalties by Calvin Sheunda at the other end saw Nondies close the gap to a point.

In the final half, Mukidza drilled in three penalties against Sheunda’s one to change the scoreline to 16-9.

Nondies fought on to score a try through Nyaenya Moseti and added the extras ensured a 16-16 tie.

The try sent the game to extra time where Mukidza drilled in three penalties for a 25-16 before Nondies responded with a converted try for 23 points.

About Impala Floodlights

The event has traditionally been played as the curtain-raiser for the rugby 15s season. With the 2024/25 Kenya Cup season within sight, it will give teams a platform to gauge their preparedness for the upcoming season.

Clubs like Kenya Harlequin who are Impala RFC neighbours, Blak Blad, Menengai Oilers, Nondies and Nakuru RFC have in the past constantly competed in the tournament. It is played under the floodlights at night, making it even more popular and competitive.

There were two editions of the tournament in 2011. Strathmore Leos won the 29th edition of the tournament in March 2011 with Mean Machine winning the 30th edition of the tournament in October 2011.
