Onyala doubles up as the head coach for Northern Suburbs who play in the women's Kenya Cup
Nairobi-based Northern Suburbs overpowered Kakamega’s Western Spears 63-7 in a Kenya Cup league match played on Saturday 18 February at the Ruaraka Grounds in Nairobi.
Kenya 7's star Vincent Onyala who doubles up as Northern Suburbs Coach was impressed by his charges' impressive performance that saw them power 60+ past Western Spears.
In an exclusive with Mozzart Sport after the win, the Kenya 7’s winger-cum-coach congratulated his charges, saying that a win is always motivating to not only the team but also the coach.
“It is always a good feeling to win because, at the end of the day, it is an objective for the coach that the outcome should be a win,” he said.
Despite winning, the coach said that Northern Suburbs needed to work on various areas that saw them penalized during the game. Onyala is also working towards ensuring that the players are familiar with the game so that they understand their style of play.
Suburbs made several mistakes including forward passes and hands in the ruck that cost them. They were however lucky that their opponents Western Spears failed to collect the points. The Spears only managed a converted try during the match.
“There are a lot of areas to work on and know what the referee offers in terms of infringements. Just a general understanding for the players to know where to play, when to play, and how to play,” he offered.
The Kenya 7s winner is confident that his charges will make it to the finals by winning every match that comes their way.
“Hopefully making it to the finals is our number one objective, and of course winning,” Onyala told Mozzart Sport.
Northern Suburbs dominated the major part of the match, scoring a series of tries through Joyline Wanjiru, Lewin Mwevezi, Sheila Muhindi, Nelly Muthoni, Hellen Ouma and Dorcas Nyachiu.
The Spears scored their first and only try of the match through Valentine Jahinda which was converted by Marylynne Injehu.
According to Onyala, the Ladies’ Kenya Cup is a bold step in the development of Women’s Rugby in Kenya.
“We are trying. Ladies’ rugby has been neglected for a while and seeing that they have developed a Kenya Cup for the ladies is a bold step to make sure that ladies’ rugby is on the map and it improves as days go by,” he noted.
Other ladies’ teams that compete in the Kenya Cup Ladies include Yamanashi Impala, Mwamba Ladies, Nakuru Ladies, Kisumu Dolphins, and Shamas Rugby Foundation. The women’s games run concurrently with the men’s games.
