Shujaa went all the way to the Vancouver 7s finals before losing out to South Africa in the finals

Shujaa head coach Inncent ‘Namcos’ Simiyu has already identified areas of weaknesses that need to be addressed before the team’s second outing in the Edmonton leg taking place in Canada on 25th and 26th September.

In Vancouver, the first HSBC Series of the 2021 season that only has two legs, Shujaa replicated their 2018 heroics as they made it all the way from the pool stages to the finals match. Unfortunately, the team had to settle for second place after losing 5-38 to South Africa.

With the last leg of the season starting in four days, the national team head coach has already identified weakness spots that need fortifying before the team embarks on going one step better in Edmonton.

“It was a very big challenge getting to Vancouver. We just had three days to prepare for the tournament after having to quarantine but overally the boys managed to respond well. There are a few areas of concern for the team that we will look at going into the next tournament. Especially around the kickoff area and our transition from attack to defense in the pressure games. We will look on how to improve on that,” the head coach said.

Simiyu also went ahead to appraise the performance put in by Timothy Mmasi, Levy Amunga, Derrick Keyoga, Mark Kwemoi and Alvin Marube, all who were making their maiden appearance in the national team. Amunga and Marube had two tries in Vancouver while the remaining trio recorded a try apiece.

“The new guys played really well. We were quite excited with how they expressed themselves this being their first tournament. It is a step in the right direction and we will build on that performance,” the head coach said.
