Kenya Harlequin head coach Paul Murunga has urged fans to remain patient and supportive despite the team suffering back-to-back defeats in the ongoing Kenya Cup season.
Quins lost 26-24 to Nondies RFC in the Ngong Road derby before falling 42-26 to Menengai Oilers in their week five and six fixtures.
In an exclusive interview with Mozzart Sport, Pau acknowledged the challenges his side is facing but emphasized the need to stay focused and resilient.
The 2012 Kenya Cup champions put up a resilient fight in the first half, holding their own to tie 13-13 against a strong Oilers side.
However, the Oilers unleashed an impressive second-half performance to add 29 more points. Despite their determination, the Quins were unable to keep up with the intensity, ultimately falling to a 42-26 defeat.
“The game was tough. Oilers are a good side. The first half was tough, it ended 13-13, but in the second half, we made too many mistakes and allowed them into the game. For us, we have to stay in the fight. It is not yet over,” Pau offered.
The former Kenya Sevens tactician went on to acknowledge the enormity of the task ahead but expressed confidence in the team’s ability to turn things around.
Quins are set to face two of the country's most dominant teams—KCB and Kabras RFC in their next matches. They will tackle Kabras again in the Enterprise quarterfinal clash, adding more pressure.
“The only thing that can determine a season is knockout games. A team that can play well [in such moments] will win. There can only be one winner, and we have to stay in the fight, brace ourselves, and get back to winning ways,” he noted.
He noted that the setbacks were part of the game and expressed confidence that the team will bounce back from the hilly slope.
"The winning games should come in the next two or three weeks because those are our toughest games," he assured.
The development coach also assured that he is building a foundation for the team's sustained success, even if the immediate results are elusive.
“I know there is a lot of expectation from the fans, but we still have a team that we can build for years, and eventually, they will win the Kenya Cup. We are taking it step by step,” he said.
With the season reaching a critical stage, Quins will need to dig deep to meet their targets.
Last season, they reached the quarterfinal stage but were eliminated by Nondies RFC. During the 2022/23 Kenya Cup season, the team reached the semifinal but went down to defending champions Kabras RFC.
