While pleased with the result, Weru expressed dissatisfaction with the way his team went about securing the win

Menengai Oilers head coach Gibson Weru has outlined areas that need improvement despite a hard-fought 42-26 victory over Kenya Harlequin on Saturday 25 January at the RFUEA Grounds.

The win saw the Oilers maintain their impressive six-match winning streak and become only the fourth side to win all their games this season after KCB Rugby, Kabras Sugar and Nondies.

The Nakuru-based outfit also bagged five points, including a winning bonus, keeping pace with log leaders Kabras RFC as they head into the business end of the season.

Speaking to Mozzart Sport after the match, Weru acknowledged that the match against Quins presented the team's first major challenge of the season and hile they emerged victorious, he insisted that errors in execution remained a concern.

"It's a game at a time, and I know that there are teams that are above us like KCB and Kabras. This match against Quins was our first major challenge this season, and it showed us a lot about our game," Gibu offered.

While pleased with the result, Weru expressed dissatisfaction with the way his team went about securing the win. Unforced errors, poor decision-making, and tactical mistakes were among the key areas highlighted.

"I am happy with the win, but I am not happy with the way we got it. We had a lot of unforced errors on our end, and poor decision-making. But again, those are the things we work on. We get the five points, we take this huge away win, and we build on that," he offered.

Weru also pointed to tactical mistakes, particularly in the kicking game, which allowed Quins to counterattack and put pressure on his charges.

"Some of the errors we made are very tactical. If you do not kick accurately and then they gain the ball, they begin to counter-attack," he revealed.

Despite the setbacks, Weru remains confident in his squad. The team's depth was evident when changes were made at halftime, resulting in a noticeable shift in play. From a 13-13 tie at halftime, the Oilers scored 29 solid points against Quins' 13.

"Overall, I'm confident in the squad. We made a few changes at half-time, and they changed the way we played. We have a quality team, and I am optimistic about our continued growth as we look ahead to the next matches," he said.

Looking ahead to their next fixture against an unbeaten Nondies RFC on Saturday 1 February, Weru is aware that the stakes are higher. Nondies have yet to lose a match this season, setting the stage for a thrilling encounter.

"I am really excited because these are the types of matches that I want to play. They show you what is working and what is not working. We can use these matches to work on ourselves and get much better," he concluded.

The Oilers currently sit third on the log with 30 points. They are separated from log leaders Kabras RFC by point difference.
