Paris Olympics: Wambua happy with Shujaa display in 'preseason before preseason'

The sevens team matched their best ever Olympics outing after finishing ninth on Saturday

Kenya men's rugby sevens team head coach Kevin Wambua believes that his team had a "decent" outing at the Paris Olympics, despite failing to win any of their pool matches and only finishing ninth.

Wambua was speaking moments after Shujaa registered their second win at the Summer Games, beating Samoa 10-5 in the 9-10 placement game.

Their first win came on Thursday against Uruguay.

"I think we had a decent outing and am very happy with our overall performance," Wambua, who took over the reins at the national team in August last year said. "A look at our squad shows that three-quarter of them were first-time Olympians and so they should come out with their heads held high given the level of opposition we faced."

Kenya, placed in a tough Pool B, fell to second-seeded Argentina (31-12), Australia (21-14) and Samoa (26-0), before winning their last two games to even their best ever finish at the Olympic Games.

"For us it was all about trusting our systems and just about learning how to play against top teams," Wambua added.

With attention set to shift to next season's HSBC Sevens Series - where Kenya will compete after gaining promotion earlier this year - co-captain Tony Omondi believes they are set to go.

"Paris was a successful run though we didn't medal as we promised," Omondi said. "We take the experience here and hope to apply it in our preseason."
