Former Kenya Simbas backrower Edwin Machanje, famously known as Pablo, has culminated his era as a player at Mwamba RFC after close to two decades of turning up for the team. He has now shifted gears to full-time coaching.
Pablo played his final match for Mwamba RFC during their 31-20 loss to Nakuru RFC in the final 2023/24 regular league match played on Saturday, March 9, at the Nakuru Athletic Club.
When the league began, Pablo was included in the team’s technical bench, tasked with coaching the forwards.
During his playing tenure with the club, Pablo achieved several milestones, including helping Mwamba RFC win several Enterprise Cup titles, numerous National Sevens Circuit titles, and the ultimate honor of representing Kenya Simbas on the international stage.
Breaking the news on their social media handles, the club noted that Pablo had been their heartbeat and would leave an indelible mark. He was instrumental in their steady rise this season. The Black Shirts did not win any matches in 2023, but they started this year on a high to end the season at position eight, narrowly missing a playoff spot.
At the same time, he was instrumental in the team’s performance during the 2023 National Sevens Circuit where they finished in fifth place for the second consecutive season, amassing 79 points, a notable improvement of six points compared to the previous campaign.
“Pablo's journey has been nothing short of extraordinary, marked by triumphs, sacrifices, and unwavering dedication to the Black jersey. Captain, leader, and a true Kulabu at heart, Pablo has steered our ship through victories and challenges and embodied the essence of sportsmanship and passion. Recently named as a player-coach, he played a pivotal role in the late surge that has positioned us on the cusp of playoffs qualification,” the club announced.
With his next venture being a full-time coach, the club wished him all the best, noting that his impact on the team would forever be felt.
“Now, as he turns the page to embrace a new role as a full-time coach, we are excited to witness Pablo's influence continue to shape the future of Mwamba Rugby Club. His dedication to mentoring the next generation of Kulabu Pride youngsters speaks volumes about his commitment to the club's legacy,” part of the statement read.
“Thank you, Pablo, for 17 years of magic, camaraderie, and inspiration. Here's to the next chapter!” the club’s statement concluded.
