Kenya Cup side Kisumu RFC are aiming at greater heights after acquiring a new coach; Oscar Okaron.
Okaron who parted ways with nationwide side Administration Police (AP) Warriors on June 1 will be keen to propel the lakeside team to greater heights.
He left the Warriors after just one season at the helm, where he guided them to finish second in the 2023/24 Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Nationwide league where they narrowly lost to Project 61 in the nationwide quarterfinals 12-10 miss a semifinal slot.
In the 2023 National 7s Circuit, they finished in second position.
Announcing the news on their social media handles, Kisumu RFC posted a picture of Okaron with the caption of a ticking clock. It is now a matter of when and not if he will start his duties with the club soon.
Okaron will work with the club’s assistant coach Fabian Olando who has been in charge since coach Lawi Buyachi’s departure in October last year.
Okaron is not new to developing clubs from scratch to excellence.
Prior to his job at Administration Police, the tactician had led Homeboyz RFC to finish ninth in the regular season during the 2022/23 Kenya Cup season. Despite the team’s financial challenges, the tactician inspired zeal in them to fight.
His impact on the club was immediately felt after his departure as they were relegated to the Championship league after 13 years in the top tier.
He was part of the team that formed Koyonzo Rugby and saw them win the 2022 and 2023 Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Term Two rugby 7s games.
In 2023, he made history with Koyonzo as they went on to win their maiden Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) Rugby 7s title.
He was part of the coaching team that saw Kakamega High School win the KSSSA 7s and 15s titles in 2012 and 2013.
In addition, he coached Busia Borderucks during the 2021/22 season.
With the 2024 National 7s Circuit coming up, Okaron’s first duty will be to ensure they improve from their 10th place finish last year where they amassed 33 points.
