A cup final will be enough for Oilers to clinch the overall title if second placed KCB win the last leg of the season

The winner of the 2022 National Sevens Circuit will be decided this weekend 16-17 July when the sixth and final leg of the season takes place at the Bull Ring Arena where the Kakamega 7s will be held.

As things stand, a trailblazing Menengai Oilers top the table on 94 points after clinching the Prinsloo 7s in Nakuru which was their maiden tournament win in their history.

Overall defending champions KCB, who won the last edition held in 2019 before the coronavirus enforced break, sit in second on the table on 90 points and have all the work to do in their bid to defend that title.

Strathmore Leos have an outside chance in third place on 85 points but the race remains firmly between Oilers and KCB unless something dramatic happens and the two sides fail to hit top gear in the last season outing.

Having gone to the top of the circuit standings for the very first time after winning in Nakuru, Oilers head coach Gibson Weru backed his side to go all the way after breaking their cup final jinx, stating that the Prinsloo win will act as much needed impetus in their chase for a very first 7s title.

“The Prinsloo 7s win gives us a shot in the arm heading into the last outing of the season. The biggest task we had is to recover before we started reviewing and making preparations again. I believe, following our performance in Nakuru, we have a very good chance of going all the way and winning the Series,” the head coach told Mozzart Sport.

Slotted as first seeds in the tournament, Oilers will fight against Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, Nondescript and Vihiga Granites in Pool A knowing that a cup final appearance will be all that they need to lift the crown if KCB win the Kakamega tournament.

KCB are in pool D alongside Kabras Sugar, Kabarak University and Daystar Falcons.
