Shujaa are preparing for the 2022 Commonwealth Games
With the Kenya 7s hitting camp to step up their preparations ahead of the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, head coach Damian McGrath is looking to sharpen his side’s basic skills and physical fitness.
Shujaa have posted torrid results recently in the HSBC World Sevens Series, winning just one of their last 14 games, a run that cost Innocent ‘Namcos’ Simiyu his job with McGrath tasked with taking over the reins.
The former Samoa 7s head coach revealed that he was delighted to have Strength and conditioning coach Geoffrey Kimani back as he looks to sharpen the rough edges in the side.
“We are very fortunate to have coach Kimani back with us and these two or three weeks will be all physical and developing the players to be ready for the rigors of the sevens season.
We are also working on the basic skills I think I made it clear when I first came, I thought the skills were something that needed to be upgraded and we are doing basic breakdown skills,” said McGrath.
So lethargic have Shujaa been that they are in danger of suffering relegation and recently just barely secured a ticket to the Rugby Sevens World Cup set for September this year after a shambolic Africa 7s.
McGrath was confident of an improved showing at the Commonwealth Games adding that he has a capable squad who just need to prove their worth ahead of the Games.
“We are making full use of everything at our disposal to have perfect preparations, not just for the Commonwealth Games but for the next 12 months. We have names well known to Kenyan rugby fans.
The players made themselves available and they are here to try and prove their worth. The camp play on past experiences and they have got to prove they are good enough to get to the team and they are training very well.
We are confident and why shouldn't we be because we have some great players here, they group has been good and everybody seems to be happy and enjoying training,” added McGrath.
