The team is gearing up for the Utumishi Opens, Nakuru Opens, and Mang’u Opens tournaments scheduled for February this year

Newly-appointed Gilgil Town Secondary School principal David Mbugua has assured that under his administration, the school will attain the greatest heights in rugby.

The school is coming from a successful 2023 where they won the two legs of the Kings Shield Tournament, Kabeberi 7s, Safari 7s, Prinsloo 7s, Jomo Kenyatta Opens, and the 2023 Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association games where they reached the final stage but went down to Mwira Girls’ after a spirited fight.

They ended the year on a high by winning all the categories in the Scrummage Africa kids’ tournament played at the Kakamega High School on December 16.

Speaking to Mozzart Sport, the principal was glad for his appointment, noting that the future of the school in sports was promising. Mbugua takes over the reins from Evans Missiani.

With the school already having a strong sports culture, Mbugua said he was keen on expanding the appeal of rugby, not only among the boys but also among the girls.

"As a school, we have already identified rugby as the main sport in the school. We are delighted with the success of the school in the previous years, and we hope to build on that this year. We will continue to make it popular among the students so that we can build on that momentum," he averred.

The principal said his main objective would be to ensure that the transition from form four to the university level would not affect the team. He aims to support the club in developing a strong pool of talent from as early as the entry-level.

Even when the ones in Form Four transition to the next level, we believe we will have a team ready to pick up from there,” he explained.

Part of developing an unbeatable pool of talent, according to the principal, is hiring the services of experienced coaches, as well as availing funds for the team’s activities including away matches and friendlies.

He also hinted at improving the training grounds to further grow the game.

We will create linkages with all the stakeholders in the school and around the county to grow the game,” he assured.

He insisted on the importance of the sport in building character, teamwork, and resilience.
