
KRU suspends all rugby activities to mourn Raila Odinga

The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has announced the suspension of all rugby-related activities across the country in honour of the late Rt. Honourable former Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga.

In a statement dated Thursday, 16 October and signed by the Chief Executive Officer, Thomas Odundo, the union directed all affiliates, clubs, associate members, and partners to halt operations during the seven-day national mourning period declared by the Government of Kenya.
“Further to the unfortunate passing of the Rt. Honourable Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga and the subsequent declaration by the Government of the Republic of Kenya of seven (7) days of national mourning, the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) hereby directs the suspension of all rugby-related activities across the country during this period,” the statement read in part.
The union expressed solidarity with the nation, extending its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and supporters of the late statesman.
“The Kenya Rugby Union joins the nation in mourning and extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and supporters of the late Rt. Hon. Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga,” the statement continued.
KRU also confirmed that normal rugby activities will resume after the official mourning period, in accordance with national directives.
“We thank all affiliates and partners for their understanding and cooperation during this solemn time,” concluded CEO Odundo.

Following KRU’s directive, the organisers of the 2025 Impala Floodlit Tournament have revised the event’s schedule with respect to the national mourning period.
In a statement signed by Impala Rugby Club Chairman Peter Nduati and 2025 Impala Floodlit Organising Committee Chairman Daniel Ndaba, the tournament, originally set to kick off on Saturday, 18 October, will now commence on Saturday, 25 October.
The semifinals will be played on Saturday, 1 November, with the grand final slated for Saturday, 8 November.
“The revision is in respect of the passing of the former Prime Minister, Right Honourable Raila Amolo Odinga, and to join the nation in mourning the statesman,” the organisers stated.
They further assured fans that all purchased tickets remain valid for the new dates.
“We join the rugby fraternity in passing our heartfelt condolences to Raila’s family, friends, and the nation of Kenya. May Baba rest in eternal peace!”
The quarterfinals were initially scheduled to feature exciting matchups, including Kenya Harlequin versus Blak Blad, Nondescripts against Strathmore Leos, Impala RFC facing Mwamba RFC, and reigning champions Menengai Oilers taking on KCB RFC.
In the Varsities category, fixtures between Kabete Stallions and USIU, as well as JKUAT and Impala Swaras, were set to kick off early in the day at the Impala Club and RFUEA Grounds, respectively.
