For years, Strathmore Leos have rallied behind one number: 27.

It appears on their team shirts, in their training sessions, and even in their post-match celebrations. But what does it truly stand for?

Mozzart Sport had a chat with the team’s co-captain and forward Barnabas Owuor, who explained that 27 is a philosophy.

“27 is basically the sum of all. You have 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year. If you add them up, 2 + 4 + 7 + 3 + 6 + 5, you get 27. That is Leos’ mantra,” Owuor explained.

The number symbolizes the idea that greatness is built from the sum of consistent efforts, every hour, every day, and every season.

“We believe in giving our best year in and year out. The sum of all is not just rugby, but the collective experience we have in life,” he added.

Owuor further described the mantra as a holistic approach that extends beyond the pitch. The Leos aim to nurture not just great players, but well-rounded individuals who excel academically, lead responsibly, and contribute meaningfully to society.

That mindset has been reflected in their performances this season.

The students closed the National Sevens Circuit second on the log with 105 points, marking a significant leap from last season’s fifth-place finish on 78 points.

They kicked off with a second-place finish at the Driftwood 7s, narrowly losing 15–14 to KCB Rugby in the final.

Redemption came swiftly at the Prinsloo 7s, where they defended their title after beating the Bankers 24–7 in a rain-soaked final.

At the Christie 7s, they fell to Menengai Oilers in the semifinals, but bounced back to claim the Embu 7s title, defeating KCB 31–21.

Their momentum slowed at the Kabeberi 7s, where they were edged out by Daystar Falcons in the semis. That result dented their overall title hopes.

Hopes of recovery at the Dala 7s were dashed after another narrow 15–14 loss to KCB in the quarterfinals, but their consistency across tournaments ensured they finished second overall, their best finish in recent years.

The Leos have now shifted focus to the 15s season, where they open their campaign at the Impala Floodlights on Saturday, 18 October, starting with a clash against Nondescripts RFC.
