His untimely demise was confirmed by Kenya Cup side Kisumu RFC, who chose not to disclose the cause of death.
In their tribute, the club described him as a gifted player, a dominant ball carrier and an exemplary leader whose influence was felt both on and off the pitch.
“Sad day for the Bravehearts family as we mourn the passing on of our former player Charles Odhiambo ‘Obako’.
He will be remembered as a gifted player, strong ball carrier and astute leader both on and off the pitch,” the club said in a statement, adding that a minute of silence will be observed before their Kenya Cup match against KCB Rugby at Mamboleo Stadium on Saturday.
Former Kenya Sevens captain Andrew Amonde was among those who paid tribute, honouring the legacy Obako leaves behind.
“Saddened by the news of a great rugby servant’s passing. Thank you for the memories and for everything you gave to this beautiful game.
It was an honour to share the field with you. Rest in peace, my friend, until we meet again, Obako,” Amonde wrote.
Odhiambo enjoyed one of the longest-serving stints at Nakuru RFC, becoming a cornerstone of the club’s golden era.
He played a crucial role in Nakuru’s historic 2014 Kenya Cup triumph and was part of the squad that lifted the National 7s Circuit crown in 2015.
Obako later joined Kisumu RFC, where he continued his leadership journey. He was instrumental in the club’s promotion to the Kenya Cup during Lawrence Buyachi’s coaching tenure.
His influence extended beyond match days, earning him admiration from young players and peers alike.
This weekend’s fixtures will carry a sombre tone across the country. Nakuru RFC will face Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad in a match that will also honour Obako’s contribution to the game and to the rugby family.
Mozzart Sport joins the rugby fraternity in mourning the loss of Obako. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
