In a statement on Wednesday morning, KRU Chairman Alexander ‘Sasha’ Mutai expressed his condolences to the entire rugby community and family saying: “On the rugby field, Ogre (Kinyany’s nickname within the rugby circles) was a towering presence and a relentless competitor, yet off the field, he exuded a gentle and larger-than-life personality that left an indelible mark on those he encountered. His absence leaves a void that words cannot adequately fill.
“Our deepest sympathies go out to his family, and we offer our heartfelt prayers for strength during this challenging period.
“May the Almighty God grant his soul eternal peace.”
A three time Kenya Cup winner as both player and coach for Kenyan side Kenya Harlequin, Kinyany extended his services for his side as the club’s Chairman for the 2012-13 season.
In February that year, Kinyany was elected alongside Chris Kibe (secretary) and Mike Mbaya (Treasurer), while going on to replace the outgoing chairman - Phillip Jalang’o.
Beyond the domestic scene, Kinyany was an integral part of the Kenya 15s side - Kenya Simbas - as a member of the coaching staff that went on to clinch multiple Elgon Cup wins, while also guiding the team to an Africa Cup title in 2011.
The latter saw him work under former head coach Michael “Tank” Otieno.
At Mozzart Sport, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the immediate family and the Kenyan rugby community.
