KRU cites the postponement to 'ongoing consultation and and adjustment of the season's calendar'

The Kenya Rugby Union has announced the postponement of the much-anticipated 2023/24 Kenya Cup kickoff.

In a statement seen by Mozzart Sport, the country's rugby governing body Wednesday announced that the kickoff dates had been postponed to Saturday 2 December across all tiers; Kenya Cup, championship, and the nationwide league.

According to the union, the postponement of the leagues has been necessitated by ‘ongoing consultation and adjustment of the season’s calendar.’

“As a result of ongoing consultation and adjustments to the seasonal calendar, the commencement of the Kenya Rugby Union 2023/24 league season has been rescheduled to take place on Saturday, December 2, 2023,” KRU announced. “This applies to all levels, including the Kenya Cup, KRU Championship, and KRU Nationwide Leagues.

“Details of the updated fixtures will be provided in a forthcoming communication.”

Last week, the Kenya Rugby Union unveiled the fixtures for the upcoming 2023/24 Kenya Cup season with the season then set to kick off on 25 November 2023.

In a significant change from the previous three seasons, this edition will feature 16 matchdays, reintroducing the home-and-away format for clubs within the same pool.

The regular season was slated to run until April 2024, paving the way for playoffs, semifinals, and the final.

Notably, the season was to mark the return of the Top Six playoffs, where teams ranked third to sixth after the regular season were to vie for semi final qualification.

The KRU Championship and Nationwide were also scheduled to commence on 25 November.

The fixtures remain unchanged with Kenya Cup defending champions Kabras RFC set to kickstart their title defense against newbies Kisumu RFC.

2022/23 Kenya Cup finalists KCB Rugby will also welcome Nondies RFC in what will be a repeat of the 2023 Impala Floodlights where the Bankers labored 25-23 past Nondies to win a 10th consecutive Impala Floodlights title.
