Having recorded dominant shutout wins over Ivory Coast (34-0) and Ghana (33-0) earlier in the day, the Morans walked into the clash against the tournament's defending champions, Uganda, as the team to beat.
However, the Ugandans, no strangers to fierce East African derbies, brought physicality and grit that tested Kenya to the wire.
The first half was a tactical tug-of-war, with both sides refusing to blink. Kenya showed attacking intent but were consistently repelled by Uganda’s sturdy defense.
It took until the ninth minute for the deadlock to be broken. Dennis Abukuse muscled past his marker with a powerful fend, then turned on the pace to touch down Kenya’s first try of the game.
Moments later, William Mwanji pounced on an intercept, sparking a fluid passing move. George Ooro sliced through the Ugandan defense to score Kenya’s second try, which was successfully converted to give the Morans a 12-0 lead.
Uganda responded in the 13th minute, capitalising on a loose pass to register the first try scored against Kenya in the tournament. However, the conversion attempt was missed, keeping the Morans ahead.
The closing stages were tense and physical. A missed kick by Kenya invited pressure, and a mispass from Jackson Siketi nearly cost them, but a timely interception by Brian Mutua halted Uganda’s final surge, securing the Kenyan victory.
With a 100% record in the tournament, the Morans closed out their pool matches unbeaten and have advanced into the knockout stages.
Up next, the Morans will tackle Nigeria in the fourth Cup quarterfinal, which kicks off at 9:06 am EAT on Sunday, 22 June.
