At the RFUEA Grounds, Kabras RFC’s intent to defend their Kenya Cup title was clear when they saw off stubborn Kenya Harlequin 43-22
Strathmore Leos will have themselves to blame after going down 20-10 to Mwamba RFC in a match played on Saturday 15 February at the KCB Sports Club.
The Leos headed into the match keen to extend their winning run following victory over Impala RFC in week seven.
Mwamba, on the other hand, was seeking to get back to winning ways after a loss to Kisumu RFC.
The thrilling and physically intense match kept fans on the edge of their seats.
The game kicked off with both teams displaying immense physicality, but it was Mwamba who capitalized first.
A Strathmore infringement allowed former Kenya U20 star Xavier Kipng’etich to slot in an early penalty, putting Mwamba ahead with three points.
Mwamba came close to scoring the first try of the match but lost the ball in their green zone, squandering a golden opportunity.
However, they made amends shortly after. A powerful break from Steven Sikuta in Strathmore’s 22 saw him offload to Brian Mutugi, who in turn set up Ian Wamalwa for the first try of the game.
Kipng’etich added the extras to give Mwamba a 10-0 lead.
Strathmore responded with a determined attack, stringing together strong passes as they pushed forward.
Unfortunately, a knock-on in their green zone denied them a crucial try.
The Leos persisted, and after enduring over 10 minutes of pressure in their half, they earned a penalty just before halftime to put three points on the board.
In the second half, Mwamba came out firing, forcing Strathmore into errors. Another knock-on from the students saw Mwamba seize the moment, and Charles Kuka scored three more points from a penalty.
Despite their struggles, Strathmore kept pushing and nearly scored again, but a loose ball was quickly kicked into their half by Mwamba, earning them a lineout.
Although they initially failed to defend it, Mwamba recovered possession swiftly, and this time, they made no mistake.
Humphrey Wambi crossed over the try line, and a successful conversion extended their lead further.
Strathmore refused to go down without a fight, with Gabriel Ayimba finally breaking through for a try. Stephen Osumba added the conversion to keep the game within reach.
Moments later, Strathmore earned a penalty after a Mwamba infringement, and Osumba was once again precise, reducing the gap to 17-10.
Tensions ran high as the match turned physical, with players and fans nearly coming to blows before officials quickly intervened.
However, Mwamba remained composed and capitalized on another Strathmore infringement, with Christopher Asira slotting in a penalty to seal their 20-10 victory.
The Mark Mshila-coached side will be looking to pick another win when they make a short trip to the Impala Grounds to tackle Impala RFC.
The Leos on the other hand will be in search of their third win of the season when they welcome Nakuru RFC next weekend.
Meanwhile, KCB Rugby’s fine form continued when they saw off Nondies RFC 55-8 in a match played at the Ngong Racecourse.
At the RFUEA Grounds, Kabras RFC’s intent to defend their Kenya Cup title was clear when they saw off stubborn Kenya Harlequin 43-22.
Blak Blad RFC picked their first win of the year after defeating South Coast Pirates 50-3.
In Nakuru, Menengai Oilers asserted their dominance after seeing off Impala RFC 56-3.
