The bankers deep fried them 29-7 to defend the title for a third consecutive time
KCB Rugby are the winner of the 2024 Kabeberi 7s after a dominant performance against Menengai Oilers in a nerve-wracking final played on Saturday 25 August at the RFUEA Grounds.
The bankers deep-fried Menengai 29-7 to defend the title for a third consecutive time.
Both teams were eager for their first Cup win of the season. KCB had previously lost to Kenya Harlequin at the Kakamega Ingo 7s, and the Oilers fell to Kabras RFC in Dala the previous weekend.
KCB came out firing, applying early pressure on the Oilers' defence.
Floyd Wabwire exploited an overlap on the wing, scoring the Bankers' first try. Emmanuel Opondo then cut through the defence with a slick step to add the second try, giving KCB a 12-0 lead.
Jacob Ojee followed up with a powerful run, brushing off Dennis Abukuse to score KCB's third try.
With momentum fully in their favour, KCB continued to dominate as Opondo orchestrated another attack, setting up Festus Shiasi for the fourth try, pushing the score to 22-0 by halftime.
After the break, Opondo again showed his class, connecting with Asati for a try under the posts.
Although Abukuse scored a consolation try for the Oilers, KCB sealed the win.
Meanwhile, Kenya Harlequin secured third place with a 33-14 win over the Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA) Monks, keeping their title hopes alive.
CUEA Monks struck first through Samuel Omollo, who outmanoeuvred Herman Humwa to score.
A missed opportunity by Amon Wamalwa left Quins trailing until Lucky Dewald scored twice in quick succession, giving them the lead. Wambani Hassan then equalized for the Monks with a long-range try.
Wiseman Aganya put Quins back in front after picking up a loose ball and fending off two defenders to score in the corner.
Humwa capped off the victory, finishing a move started by Dewald, who broke through the defence to set him up for a try near the uprights.
Kabras finish sixth
Kabras RFC had to settle for sixth place after a narrow 14-12 loss to Strathmore Leos in the fifth-place playoff.
Kabras controlled the first half, with Alfred Orege scoring a try on the left wing and another after capitalizing on a loose ball, both converted.
Despite their strong start, Kabras couldn't hold off Strathmore, who edged them out for the win.
