Kabras RFC rising star Patrick Lumumba is riding high on the momentum from the 2024 national 7s circuit. The youngster gained invaluable experience and built confidence that has landed him a spot in the 36-man training squad for the upcoming Safari 7s.

Lumumba, affectionately known as ‘Field Gun’ for his exploits on the pitch, was a key player when Kabras RFC won the Christie 7s despite the absence of key players who were out on national duty.

Kevin Wekesa, Brian Tanga, and Lameck Ambetsa were out with the Shujaa in Paris for the Olympics while the likes of speedster Derrick Ashiundu, Alfred Orege, Walter Okoth, and Barry Robinson were with the Simbas in Uganda for the Rugby Africa Cup.

It was that opportunity that Lumumba seized, diligently playing for the team and leading them to victory.

Reflecting on his performance during the 7s circuit, Lumumba admitted that it was not all smooth sailing at first.

"During the circuit, I started averagely, I can say 50 percent, but I focused on building up to Prinsloo where I could rate myself at 90%,” he offered.

This steady progression, both in skill and mental fortitude, was key to his development. The biggest lesson he learned? Patience.

"In a game of 7s, you have to be accurate. Practice patience before making any move on the pitch. Do not rush things because you want to achieve more,” he disclosed.

This mindset helped him stay focused on his long-term goals, which he admits were initially clouded by disappointment after missing out on a spot in the Kenya Shujaa or Simbas teams following the 2023 circuit.

"I was somehow disappointed and did not anticipate much in this tournament, but my friends encouraged me to keep going. Their belief in me kept me going,” he recalled.

One of the standout moments during the circuit journey was the Christie 7s, particularly the quarterfinal match against KCB, which he regards as his best game. Kabras defeated KCB 12-7 to book a semifinal slot. That match gave him the confidence to believe he could go further in his career.

"I had a feeling that we would win, but I still had to do my best. It was my gauge,” he said.

The youngster credited his family and coach Edwin Achayo for keeping him motivated throughout the journey, noting that they played a crucial role during moments of doubt. When expectations were low, he had to "let go and let God."

"My family keeps me going, and my coach Achayo. He is there to guide me anytime,” he averred.

Now, with the Safari 7s call-up, Lumumba is determined to continue improving, especially in areas like aerial ball handling.

"Every day is a learning day. Even when you feel you are okay, you need to improve. Every level requires a new level of skill. I will keep working," Lumumba who is already living his dream of playing for the champions, says, adding that he is dreaming bigger.

He is optimistic that his hard work and persistence will see him make the final team and live his dream of representing Kenya Shujaa on the international stage.

Lumumba’s journey started at Koyonzo Boys before joining Kabras RFC in 2019. His debut for the team came in 2021, playing against Blak Blad. That marked the beginning of his promising rugby career.
