Kabras RFC defeated KCB RFC 29-23 in a Kenya Cup match played on Saturday afternoon at KCB Club in Ruaraka

KCB RFC found themselves on the receiving end of Kabras RFC’s hard work, patience, and skills, going down 23-29 in a Kenya Cup match played on Saturday 18 February at the KCB Ruaraka Club in Nairobi.

This was the 15th meeting between the two sides with KCB RFC winning 11 out of the 15. Kabras RFC travelling fans were clearly over the moon after the win in what was the highlight fixture of the Kenya Cup this weekend.

Speaking to Mozzart Sport after the match, Kabras RFC Head Coach Carlos Kyatwa was pleased with the performance of the side, describing the day as ‘one of the most exciting and happiest day' for the team. According to the coach, the win was a historical one, but they need to move quickly since they still have Oilers to tackle next weekend.

“This is is a very historical win for the team but just another normal match day routine for us. I am not downplaying the win but am trying to get to us that we still have the Oilers to play and that will determine who sits on top so we do not take this as if we are the log leaders of the tournament, we just moved one up.” Kyatwa said.

The win saw Kabras RFC maintain a 10/10-win record to move to the top of the table with 48 points.

Kyatwa revealed that most of their tactics worked, and they managed to pile pressure on KCB RFC from the kickoff. KCB RFC started the match on a low note succumbing to pressure from the visitors and a noisy fanbase. They would later up their game some minutes to half time.

“Everything worked well for us. We wanted to lead the game from the word go and managed that.”

Kabras RFC demonstrated good defense, and would not let the Bankers breakthrough. They also had awesome breakdowns, all of which they used against KCB. Despite that, the coach opines that they will need to work on the lineouts, ability to handle momentum and decision making which has been a big issue for close to two years now.

“One of the few areas of concern right now is our lineouts. We lost a couple of lineouts but I give credit to the boys. Decision-making has been the biggest issue for almost two years now because it is an individual decision. But we are getting better.”

According to coach Kyatwa, the team is getting better as a unit and is not dependent on the forwards, a factor he says was hurting the team in the past.

Next assignment - vs Menengai Oilers - Saturday 25 - Nakuru Showground

“We will be at at home where we hunt well. I am looking forward to the game. We will train and strategise appropriately for it."

This will be a repeat of last season’s finals where Kabras RFC edged the Oilers 34-28.
