Mombasa Sports Club (MSC) RFC scripted history at the 2025 Kabeberi 7s after storming into their first-ever cup quarterfinal in this year's National Sevens Circuit following an impressive performance on Saturday, 6 September, at the RFUEA Grounds.

That blistering form saw them join giants KCB, Menengai Oilers, Strathmore Leos, Kabras Sugar, Daystar Falcons, Mwamba RFC, and Catholic Monks in the last eight.

The coastal side, who previously struggled to pick form, opened their campaign with a narrow 15-14 win over Nakuru RFC before falling 31-0 to KCB.

A hard-fought 10-10 draw against Mean Machine was enough to see them through on a superior head-to-head record.

Defending champions KCB looked imperious, winning all three of their pool matches. The Bankers, currently under the guidance of coach Andrew Amonde, demolished Mean Machine 54-0, blanked Mombasa 31-0, and sealed their perfect record with a narrow 21-15 win over Nakuru.

Speaking to Mozzart Sport, Amonde hailed his side’s discipline and focus as they eye a fourth consecutive Kabeberi crown.

“On the first day, we won all the pool matches. The boys have always been working hard, and they stuck to the goals set. The next challenge is tomorrow, and ours is to take a game at a time.

The big thing with Nakuru is that they were trying to get to the quarters, but we had already qualified. We expected them to bring the match on, but the experience and camaraderie of our team carried us through,” Amonde said.

Menengai Oilers also booked their quarterfinal slot with victories over Embu (45-0) and Kisumu (52-0). However, their final pool match ended in a 28-0 humbling by Kabras Sugar, who topped Pool D unbeaten.

Oilers finished second and will now face Daystar Falcons, while Kabras meet Catholic Monks.

Oilers coach Lawi Buyachi remained upbeat despite the loss.

“Good wins so far, we were raring to go. Our approach remains the same: one game at a time.

The boys were confident heading into the match against Kabras because they defeated them at the Christie 7s pool match.

There is too much quality, and we cannot simply arrive at the party without preparation. If you snooze, you lose,” Buyachi offered.

On his part, Kabras coach Carlos Kyatwa credited the result to focus and patience.

“We had to taste what losing feels like to appreciate the wins we are accustomed to. But we are picking up well,” he said.

Nakuru RFC, despite a shaky start, showed resilience with a 12-0 win over Mean Machine and a spirited fight against KCB, though they eventually fell 21-15, losing a chance to reach the knockout stage.

The team’s tactician, former Kenya Sevens star Oscar Ouma, admitted that inconsistency was their undoing.

“Our performance has not been the best. Game one was shaky; we came in the second game and then played well in the third game.

In rugby, you have to be consistent. If we played like we did against KCB from the start, we could be in a better position,” Ouma reflected.

Mwamba RFC, meanwhile, bounced back strongly after a 25-7 opening defeat to Strathmore Leos. They saw off Kenya Harlequin 17-0 before edging Impala 7-5 to book their quarterfinal date with Strathmore.

Daystar Falcons impressed with back-to-back wins over Homeboyz (15-7), Catholic Monks (24-12), and MMUST (25-12) to finish top of Pool C.

Catholic Monks, meanwhile, picked themselves up from defeat to Falcons to beat MMUST (26-7) and Homeboyz (29-10), securing a last-eight spot.
