After a poor show so far this season in the Kenya Cup, Homeboyz RFC's fate has now been sealed

2024 will go down in history as one of the worst years for Homeboyz Rugby who were relegated from the Kenya Cup league for the first time after 13 years.

The team popularly known as the Deejayz have been in their poorest form this season. They have been on a 16-match winless streak since mid-January 2023.

Homeboyz only managed a draw in this campaign with their last win coming on 14 January 2023 when they beat Mean Machine 31-7 in the 2022/23.

Their relegation was confirmed after they dished out a walkover to Mwamba RFC in the Kenya Cup week 10 action. That saw them deducted two points, leaving them with zero points.

Their woes are expected to continue next weekend when they give Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad a walkover in the final match of the season.

Homeboyz RFC was formed in 2009 with Paul Murunga then playing the role of both coach and player. Its main reason for formation was to offer budding players a platform to showcase their talents.

They would then earn promotion to the Kenya Cup in 2011 after winning the Eric Shirley Shield back-to-back.

In 2015, they reached the Enterprise Cup finals but were denied by KCB Rugby. Three years later, in 2018 they lifted the Enterprise Cup after seeing off Impala RFC 21-3 at RFUEA.

The side was at its peak during the 2016/2017 season where they finished on top of Kenya Cup standings. They would then get a direct home semifinal but Kabras RFC eliminated them in the semis in what was an entertaining match in a wet Jamhuri Grounds with the match ending 22-17 in sudden death.

So fine was their form that during the 2017/18 season, they reached the Kenya Cup semifinal but again Kabras eliminated them in the semis 29-13.

The troubled side will have to fight for promotion when they play in the KRU Championship as from the 2024/2025 season.

At the same time, Kabras RFC top the log after 10 rounds of the Kenya Cup season. At this point, the Sugarmen have already secured a home final and will be looking to confirm the same by maintaining a perfect record in the semis.

They reached the 50-point mark, opening up a six-point lead over second-placed KCB, who currently sit on 44 points after a loss to Menengai Oilers.

Oilers hold the third spot with 37 points, while Quins follow closely behind with 33 points, closely waiting for the Oilers to fall in the final round.

Nondies have been placed fifth with 27 points, while Mwamba ascended to sixth with 24 points after a walkover win against Homeboyz.

Strathmore Leos move to seventh with 20 points, followed by Blak Blad and Nakuru RFC, both with 19 points, as Kisumu joins the relegation battle following the ruling that their match against Blak Blad will be replayed.

Catholic Monks have seven points after their loss to Strathmore Leos, while relegated Homeboyz have zero points after conceding a walkover.
