Mang’eni revealed that his engagement with Quins is on an indefinite basis, having been approached by the club’s management during the Impala Floodlit Tournament.

“I work with Quins as the forwards coach. My contract with Quins is indefinite. The Quins' management approached me on day one of the Impala Floodlights,” he said.

The former Kenya Simbas lineouts master explained that the opportunity arose following the promotion of Malik Ndemi to head coach at Impala, which left a vacancy in the Quins technical bench.

“I was to come in and replace Malik Ndemi, who had been promoted to head coach at Impala, so that vacancy was to be filled. Initially, they wanted me to just do consultancy, but when Malik left, they suggested I take up the vacancy,” he added.

Mang’eni noted that Quins have given him the flexibility to continue offering consultancy services to other clubs, having worked with Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad and Menengai Oilers, among others.

“And since I have been out for some time, I decided to serve the game. I am also working with other clubs. Quins have given me the leeway because I do consultancy on the side,” he said.

After three Kenya Cup rounds, Quins sit sixth on the log with nine points, having won two of their three matches this season.

The name Oliver Mang’eni is already a hit among local rugby faithful.

He played for the Bankers for 12 years from 2010 before retiring at the end of the 2022 Kenya Cup season. He also featured for Kenya Sevens side Shujaa during the 2014/2015 season.

Mang’eni is one of the most decorated players in local rugby, having won the Kenya Cup five times (2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2022), the Enterprise Cup three times (2015, 2016, and 2017), and the Impala Floodlit Tournament title on five occasions (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2019).

At the international level, he won the Rugby Africa Cup in 2013, featured in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, represented Kenya in the Repechage in France in 2018, and played in the Currie Cup Division One in 2022 under head coach Paul Odera.
