Floodies: KCB chasing title record against Nondies in cup final

Reading Time: 2min | Sat. 12.11.22. | 11:09

The final is slated for a 7:30 PM kick off at Impala Club on Saturday.

Former Kenya Cup champions KCB RFC will be out to pip Mean Machine as the record Impala Floodlit Tournament champions when they take on Nondescripts in the final on Saturday 12 November.

The Bankers currently sit on eight titles similar to the University of Nairobi’s Mean Machine who made the tournament their own in the early 90s as they remain the only side to manage a four-peat.

Coincidentally, KCB are currently enjoying a highly successful stint in the tournament as they have won the last three Floodies tournaments and will be chasing another Machine record to make it four in a row.

Curtis Olago’s side have however posted a slow start by their lofty standards in the tournament as they were made to sweat in the 14-10 victory over Kenya Harlequin in the ququarter-finals

Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad also put up a stern test for KCB in the semis as they limited the Bankers to only two tries in the 14-3 win.

Nondies are seeking instant redemption after suffering relegation to the Championship last season following a disastrous season in the Kenya Cup.

A comprehensive 33-7 win over fellow Championship side Impala Saracens in the quarters was followed up by a 16-11 victory over last season’s Kenya Cup runners-up Menengai Oilers.

Nondies head coach Callum Oliver admitted that his side was an underdog in the final and that they will need to be on top of their game to have a chance of winning the tournament.

“We are trying to implement the things we are trying to achieve, we are looking at some aspects which KCB will throw at us but we have to focus on ourselves because it is preseason.

No one expects us to win because we are the underdogs. We will stick to our game plan and structures, KCB are a very good side and we also need to cut errors made last Saturday,” said Oliver.
