The Kenya U20 national rugby team, Chipu, are bracing for a crucial encounter against tournament hosts Zimbabwe in what promises to be a thrilling must-win Barthes Cup clash.
The must-win clash is slated for Sunday, 27 April, at the Old Hararians Sports Club.
Chipu, who are eyeing a strong finish and a successful title defence, must not only beat Zimbabwe but also hope that Namibia falters against Tunisia to reclaim the crown they last lifted in 2024.
In that memorable final, they defeated Zimbabwe 28-13 to be crowned champions. They will be out to replicate that feat.
It has been a rollercoaster ride for the Simon Javheke-coached side in Zimbabwe.
They kicked off their campaign with a gritty 29-21 victory over Tunisia, only to stumble 32-22 against a rejuvenated Namibia.
With everything now on the line, the young Kenyan charges know that only a win will keep their hopes alive.
Despite fielding a relatively new squad with only Faran Juma returning from last year’s victorious team, Chipu appear to have adjusted well to the intensity of continental competition.
Their growth throughout the tournament suggests they are well-prepared to face the hosts in this high-stakes encounter.
Since its inception in 2008, the Barthés Trophy has grown into one of Rugby Africa’s premier competitions, providing a critical platform for young talent across the continent. Many past participants have gone on to feature for their senior national teams or pursue professional careers abroad.
This year’s edition carries even more significance, serving as a potential farewell tour for many players who are now looking to transition to senior rugby and dream of representing their nations at the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.
