Wekesa will rub shoulders with players from rugby powerhouses like Argentina, Fiji, Ireland, Australia, Spain, and Great Britain are also set to feature.

Shujaa powerhouse Kevin Wekesa has become the second Kenyan to join the highly-anticipated Rugby Premier League (RPL), a groundbreaking franchise-based rugby sevens competition set for June debut in India.

Wekesa’s inclusion comes hot on the heels of his national teammate Patrick Odongo, making the duo the first Kenyans to be drafted into the fold.

Wekesa is slated to represent the Hyderabad Heroes, a franchise that will be coached by former New Zealand Sevens captain DJ Forbes.

Meanwhile, Odongo will don Delhi Redz' jersey, under the stewardship of the legendary Tomasi Cama.

The RPL, scheduled to take place from Sunday 15 to Sunday 29 June 2025 at the Mumbai Football Arena, will feature six city-based franchises: Mumbai Dreamers, Delhi Redz, Hyderabad Heroes, Bengaluru Bravehearts, Chennai Bulls, and Kalinga Black Tigers (Bhubaneswar).

The league promises to deliver top-tier action, boasting a lineup of 30 world-class marquee players, including Olympic medalists and HSBC SVNS Series stars.

Global icons such as Perry Baker (USA), Rosko Specman (South Africa), and Scott Curry (New Zealand) will come out of retirement to join the party, highlighting the RPL’s pull on elite talent.

Players from rugby powerhouses like Argentina, Fiji, Ireland, Australia, Spain, and Great Britain are also set to feature.

Rugby India President Rahul Bose lauded the six-year journey to bring the league to life, revealing that World Rugby granted a unique 15-day window in the international calendar to allow the world’s best players to participate without scheduling conflicts.

“This made the best global rugby players available to us. From partnering with GMR Sports to securing JiaStar as our broadcast partner and creating the best possible conditions for both international and Indian players, it’s been a helluva ride. Rugby sevens is one of the most attractive television sports in modern history. Welcome, India and the world, to the Rugby Premier League," Bose said in a statement.
