Africa Men's 7s: Morans fall short in extra time thriller against Madagascar in group finale

Kenya Morans' quest for revenge against Madagascar ended in a heart-breaking 24-19 defeat in extra time at the Africa Men's 7s in Mauritius. This thrilling encounter determined the winner of Pool B, with Madagascar securing the top spot.
Both teams were undefeated entering the match, and having already guaranteed quarterfinal berths. However, victory meant claiming the pool's top spot.
Kenya aimed to make amends for their narrow 7-5 loss to Madagascar the previous weekend. However, the Makis struck first, scoring two quick tries for a 12-0 lead.
The Morans responded just before halftime. Denis Abukuse set up Gabriel Ayimba for a try, which Abukuse converted, closing the gap to 12-7.
The second half saw a seesaw battle. Amon Wamalwa capitalised on a temporary one-man advantage for Madagascar, scoring a try converted by Abukuse, giving Kenya a 14-12 lead. Madagascar countered swiftly, regaining the lead with a converted try (19-14).
Abukuse scored again for Kenya, tying the game 19-19. A missed conversion sent the match into extra time.
Kenya pressed for the win in extra time but ultimately faltered. After a penalty in a promising position, they opted for a scrum, conceding a crucial penalty. Madagascar capitalized, scoring a try and sealing their victory (24-19).
Both teams now set their sights on the cup quarterfinals taking place on Sunday.
The overall winner of the 2024 Africa Men’s 7s will be determined by the points accumulated across the two rounds.
The top two ranked team after both rounds will qualify for the 2025 World Rugby 7s Challenger Series.
