The move is aimed at building the sport’s visibility, improving the welfare of players, and setting a clear structure for the sustainable growth of the game.
The announcement comes at a crucial time as the Kenya Lionesses prepare for the 2025 Rugby Africa Women’s Cup, with over 50 players currently in an intense 11-day training camp.
The newly formed committee boasts a formidable team of professionals whose expertise spans corporate governance, coaching, communications, and global rugby development.
At the helm is Nisha Van Hoek, serving as co-chair with a focus on marketing and strategic networking. She is joined by Thomas Odundo, KRU CEO and World Rugby-accredited educator, and Paula Lanco, a key figure in rugby governance across local and international levels.
The team also includes media and public relations experts Wambui Mumbi and Wairimu Nyathira, veteran coach Mary Ochieng, corporate strategist Wanjikú Wairia, KCB Bank’s networking executive Faith Basiye, and player welfare and mentorship lead Shirley Anindo.
Tasked with a strategic and transformative mandate, the committee is charged with establishing strong governance and safeguarding frameworks to ensure the sport remains safe and transparent.
It also aims to enhance grassroots talent development by scouting and nurturing young players across the country.
Off the pitch, the committee will focus on strengthening partnerships and sponsorships that can provide financial and logistical backing for women’s rugby programs.
Another critical role will be driving visibility in the media and promoting diverse narratives that reflect the wide-ranging experiences of women in rugby.
Equity, diversity, and inclusion are central pillars of the committee’s work, with an emphasis on ensuring that women from all backgrounds have a fair and empowering platform within the sport.
KRU Chairman Sasha Mutai believes the formation of the committee represents a necessary evolution for the game.
“Leadership in rugby is about fostering inclusivity and ensuring that every player, coach, and administrator has the right platform to succeed.
This committee reflects our commitment to the growth and sustainability of women’s rugby in Kenya,” he said.
His sentiments were echoed by Co-Chair Nisha Van Hoek, who emphasised that inclusivity and effective communication will be key drivers in growing the women’s game.
“Driving the growth of women’s rugby in Kenya requires not just passion, but purposeful communication and inclusive leadership. I’m proud to be part of a team that is creating inclusive pathways and elevating women’s participation at every level of the game,” she said.
KRU CEO Thomas Odundo also welcomed the move, noting that the committee gives women’s rugby the autonomy to grow independently and define its future.
“The women’s committee is a welcome addition to our structures. It allows the game to grow along its unique path, one that is not necessarily tied to the men's journey,” Odundo noted.
The formation of the Women’s Rugby Committee comes at a momentous time as the Kenya Lionesses brace for fierce competition in the 2025 Rugby Africa Women’s Cup slated for Thursday, 1 to Monday, 16 June, in Antananarivo, Madagascar.
The team will face continental heavyweights Madagascar, South Africa, and Uganda.
