The second edition of the Mavens International Open Chess Championships is coming back in a big way.
Organisers have announced an impressive prize fund of Kshs 2million for the 20-22 March event to be held at the Piano, Campus, Westlands.

The winner of the open category will walk away with an impressive Kshs 750,000 prize fund, making it the best-paying after the 2023 Kenya Open, where the winner in this category pocketed Kshs1.3million.
Runners-up in the open category will earn Kshs 150,000, with the third-placed player pocketing Kshs 50,000.
In the ladies’ category, the winner will pocket Kshs150,000 while the runners-up will earn Kshs 70,000. The third-placed player will get Kshs 30,000.
There will also be prizes for the Best University players in both the Open and Ladies categories, as well as for People Living with Disabilities.
A junior category of the event will be held on 21 March, with special prizes to be given out to the winners.
Organisers have announced entry fees of Kshs 1,500 for the junior event. Members of the Mavens Club will pay Kshs 1,000 to take part in the junior event.
Entry fee for the Open category is Kshs 2,000, with members of the club paying Kshs 1,500.
Corporate clubs will pay an entry fee of Kshs 3,500. Last year, the tournament had a prize fund of Kshs 260,000.
The tournament will be the third grand prix event in the Chess Calendar, coming after last weekend’s Eldoret Open tournament.
The second edition of the tournament has a prize fund of Kshs120,000.
The Open winner will walk away with Kshs 40,000, with the runners-up pocketing Kshs 20,000.
The ladies’ category winner will earn Kshs 20,000.
Other categories to be rewarded include Best University, Best Western Kenya player and Best Corporate club.
