General Service Unit (GSU) volleyball team’s head coach Gideon Tarus is still devastated after the profound loss of his closest confidant and fellow coach, Daniel Bor, who tragically passed away on Saturday, 30 March.

Constable Bor collapsed and died as he was training at the Magadi General Service Unit’s National Police College - Magadi Field Campus.

He was among hundreds of other officers on training sessions and was on a route march exercise when he collapsed. He was rushed and attended at the camp dispensary and thereafter referred to Magadi Tata hospital for further treatment but succumbed at around 7 pm while undergoing treatment.

Speaking to Mozzart Sport, an audibly devastated coach Tarus noted that he lost a friend, a fellow coach, and a great talent in the volleyball world.

Tarus and the late Bor have been close friends since their high school days in Eldoret. Tarus studied at Simat Secondary School while his friend Bor was a student at Seminary High School.

They played volleyball and would meet during sports days, which further cemented their relationship.

When Bor was employed, they lived together from 2018 to 2020 before he was transferred to DCI.

On that fateful day, Tarus called his friend to check up on him as their norm, but he was told that he had collapsed and was being rushed to the hospital. He panicked and kept calling before someone broke the news to him.

“It is so painful. He was my closest friend and we used to talk every day. The news broke at around 8 pm, and I was in tears. I later gained courage and went to see his body at the Kenyatta University Mortuary because I could not believe it. I called some of his family members who broke the news to the wife,” he told Mozzart Sport.

Tarus recalls the memories they shared, including assisting each other in their coaching duties.

“His loss has left me devastated. Sometimes I would call him to come and help coach my team. I did not help with coaching his team because I am not that familiar with coaching ladies, but when he needed my advice, I was there for him. One day during a tournament, one coach asked us how we would survive without each other,” he vividly remembered.

On how he was keeping up with the loss, Tarus said, “Work keeps me busy. But in the evening, when I get messages about his funeral planning, I get emotional.”

“I will forever remember him. When I go back to coaching, he will always be in my mind,” the audibly heartbroken coach said.

Constable Bor will be laid to rest on Friday, 12 April at Mobet Village, Kipsomba Location in Uasin Gishu County.
