GSU leads the standings with 30 points, followed closely by Kenya Prisons with 24 points
General Service Unit (GSU) coach Gideon Tarus has lauded the performance his charges put in over the weekend at the Malaba Stadium in Busia County.
The side won the Dr. Arthur Odera’s tournament which was curtain raised by Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) league matches that ran from Thursday to Friday.
During the tournament, the paramilitary side ended Trailblazers’ unbeaten run with a commanding 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-23) victory to secure the trophy.
Having maintained an impeccable record since the start of the season, the 15-time champions are yet to drop a set, with Tarus expressing optimism about finishing the league unbeaten.
“I am happy for the win. It shows that there is progress in the team. We have worked on our errors. I am very happy for my boys because they bond easily. It was a test for us to see where we are,” he explained.
Tarus, who doubles up as the Wafalme Stars praised GSU’s discipline and willingness to learn from mistakes.
“They are disciplined and listen to the coaches. They also work on their shortcomings and we are friends in the team. We deploy teamwork,” he noted.
With the victory now behind their back, Tarus pointed out that they were aiming at reclaiming the league title this season.
Their five-year dominance came to a sudden halt in the playoffs last October when they were beaten 3-0 by Kenya Ports Authority. The victory by the dockers was not enough to claim the top finish but helped Kenya Prisons win the league for the first time since 2016.
“We agreed that this season we must play from the start to the last to avoid a repeat of last season’s outcome. We are analyzing all teams to see how best to play them. We plan to win the league and reclaim our glory,” he said.
GSU leads the standings with 30 points, followed closely by Kenya Prisons with 24 points.
In the women's category, reigning champions KCB secured victories against Nairobi Prisons and Kenya Army, positioning themselves at the top of the table with 18 points.
The league will take a break as players join the national team for the upcoming African games before the fourth leg, scheduled to take place at Nyayo National Stadium gymnasium.
