The tournament is geared towards building the game in the country while giving more talented players the platform to showcase their craft

At the inaugural Eliud Owalo Foundation (EOF) basketball tournament that was played on Friday through to Sunday, Zetech Sparks were crowned winners of the women's tournament.

Against all odds, the league runners-up stunned holders Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) 59-50 in a highly entertaining, despite low scoring encounter, that had Mitchelle Soukoujou and Madina Okot leading the onslaught.

The varsity side had Soukoujou on the court for just over 36 minutes, scoring 20 points, adding four assists and three rebounds.

Her efforts on the court were complimented by the lethal Okot who bagged a double-double with a massive 19 boards 12 points and an additional two steals.

In just 40 minutes, the two sides had exchanged leads nine times in a match that had the two sides tied in eight instances. Sparks led 6-4 in the opening five minutes and 14-12 after the opening quarter.

Sparks went 17-11 in the second quarter to take a 31-23 advantage to the half time break. However, Antony Ojukwu's charges emerged from the locker rooms guns blazing, going 20-14 to trail by a single basket heading to the final stanza.

The varsity side, however, kept their composure in the face of adversity, going ahead 14-07 in the fourth quarter for the all-important win that sets the stage for a dramatic league playoff as the duo is likely to face off for the league title.

Grace Irebu was the only KPA player to hit double digits with 19 but it was not enough to propel the dockers to victory.

Meanwhile, national men champions KPA shut down Ulinzi Warriors 56-53 to take the bronze medal in the men's competition.

John Wiljas shot 12 and Philip Tobias added 11. The soldiers, who led 27-25 at half time had 26 from Eric Mutoro.

In the women's Equity Bank Hawks beat United States International University (USIU) Flames 65-56 to also claim the ladies bronze.

Betty Kananu led the bankers scoring tally with 18 points. Judith Pantaleo hit 12, Naseria Ninel 11 and Hilda Indasi 10 for Flames.
