S. OchiengShujaa, KCB RFC and Tusker headline SOYA Men’s Team of the Year Nominees

The winners of the award will be announced in January 2022
The national rugby sevens side, Shujaa, reigning Kenya Cup champions KCB RFC and 2020/2021 Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) winners Tusker FC are among the five teams that will hoping to walk away with the 2021 Men’s Team of the Year Award during the Sports Personality of the Year (SOYA) Gala night set to be held on 19 January 2022 in Kakamega County.
In a 5 team list released on Tuesday, the trio above are named alongside 2021 Kenya Cup runners up Kabras Sugar and FC Talanta who were promoted to the top flight football league for the very first time in their history after winning the National Super League (NSL).

The toughest competition is however expected to be among Shujaa, KCB and Tusker who all had impressive performances to show for their case.
The Innocent Simiyu led Shujaa made up for a disappointing 9th placed finish at the Tokyo Olympics by grabbing silver and bronze respectively in the two Canadian legs of the shortened 2021 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series Circuit. Performances that saw them finish third overall in the standings behind Champions South Africa and Great Britain.
Additionally, the national 7s side won the Safari 7s tournament for the first time since 2016 after defeating Germany 12-5 in the final staged at Nyayo National Stadium.

In the Kenya Cup, Curtis Olago’s KCB displayed utter resilience to steal the title from Kabras and make it a fourth straight Kenya Cup win for the Bankers.
Despite trailing 20-0 by half time, the eight time Kenya Cup champions stunningly came from behind to claim a 25-28 sudden death extra time win in what was one of the greatest sporting comebacks in the country.
In football, Tusker ended Gor Mahia’s four year dominance as they pipped KCB FC to the title in the 2020/2021 season.

Talanta won the NSL last season with four matches to go thus earning promotion to the top tier league for the very first time in their history.
Winners of the award will be announced on Wednesday 19 January 2022.
