The games produced a blend of established champions and emerging contenders ahead of the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Term One national games in Kisumu.

The regional championships, staged across venues in the two regions, saw traditional giants tighten their grip in several disciplines while new champions emerged to challenge the old order.

Nairobi Region

In boys’ basketball, Dagoretti roared to a seventh straight regional title after edging Highway Secondary School 69-65 in a tightly contested final.

The victory continues Dagoretti’s reign in Nairobi since 2018, when they dethroned former regional kings Upper Hill School.

In the girls’ final, Moi Girls Nairobi claimed the regional crown after defeating Olympic High School 50-40.

The result continued Nairobi’s trend of producing different champions in the girls’ category since the resumption of school games after the Covid-19 break in 2022.

Former national champions Buruburu Girls fell short of the final after bowing out at the semi-final stage.

In rugby 15s, Upper Hill School successfully defended the boys’ title with a commanding 67-5 victory over Strathmore School.

The region also crowned a new girls’ rugby champion, with Mbagathi Girls Secondary School thrashing Karen C Secondary School 34-0 to win the inaugural title.

In boys’ hockey, Hospital Hill High School retained the regional crown after beating Nairobi School 3-1 in the final.

Meanwhile, Mwiki Secondary School delivered a commanding display to retain the girls’ hockey title, thrashing Pangani Girls 6-1.

Purity Moraa starred for Mwiki with a hat-trick, while Gloria Okenyuri added a brace and Margaret Wangui scored the sixth goal. Britin Nyang’ara grabbed Pangani’s consolation.

Mwiki coach Wesley Osinde believes consistent exposure at the national level will help the team grow stronger.

“Consistent participation at the national championships will help us improve and compete better against stronger teams,” said Osinde.

In boys’ handball, Highway Secondary School edged Hospital Hill 22-20 in a closely fought final to secure the regional title.

St Claire Nembu were crowned girls’ handball champions after defeating Ruai Girls 38-21.

Coast Region

In the Coast Region, basketball giants once again stamped their authority.

Kaya Tiwi Girls High School extended their dominance in girls’ basketball with a crushing 88-5 victory over St John’s Kaloleni in the final to secure their ninth consecutive regional title.

In boys’ basketball, Dr Aggrey Boys High School retained the crown after beating Mombasa Baptist School 37-25.

St Charles Lwanga High School dominated the hockey competitions, winning both the boys’ and girls’ titles.

The boys’ team defeated Waa Boys 2-0, while the girls thrashed Jilore Secondary School 5-0 to lift the regional trophy.

New champions also emerged in handball, with Kenyatta High School Mwatate clinching the boys’ title after dethroning defending champions Jaibuni Secondary School.

Mwatate Secondary School captured the girls’ handball title, ending the reign of Moi Forces Academy.

In rugby 15s, Kwale High School were crowned boys’ champions after defeating Marafa Secondary School 24-0 in the final.

Moi Forces Academy will represent the Coast Region in girls’ rugby after dominating the round-robin competition.

Attention now shifts to the Nyanza Regional games, which will be staged at Maseno School from Wednesday to Saturday this week.

Three-time Nyanza rugby champions Kisii School are set to rekindle their fierce rivalry with St Mary’s School Yala in one of the tournament’s highly anticipated clashes.

The Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) rugby champions have been placed in Pool A alongside St Mary’s Yala, former champions Maseno School, and Nyambaria School.
