The new season is likely to begin after October as the women's league is yet to conclude
Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) men’s side Prisons Kenya head coach David Lugh’aho says the team will need to get better receivers as they prepare for the new season set to begin later in the year.
In the just-concluded league playoffs won by archrivals General Service Unit (GSU) for a fifth consecutive season, the warders finished a disappointing fourth without a single win, having fallen to the holders, second-placed Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and newbies Trailblazers.
The team had to play without their best receiver, Jairus Kipsogei who suffered an ankle injury in the opening match against GSU, forcing Lugh’aho to rely solely on his liberos for reception, a task that proved tough for the duo of Charles Bosire and Daniel Maritim.
“We really missed Jairus in our matches. He is our main receiver, the best in the country and without reception a team cannot play. The situation we found ourselves in after his absence was a clear indicator that we need to train all our players on reception.
Additionally, we need to get more players who are good in that department. We have two in training college who are good and their addition will be a good boost for the new season,” offered Lugh’aho.
The tactician also called on the Prisons department to help the team by enabling them train indoors more often as the local league was shifting to indoor and training outdoors at their Ruiru base was affecting their performance.
Dates for the new season are yet to be set as the women’s regular league was stopped to allow the national team time to attend the FIVB-organised two-month training camp in Brazil ahead of the World Championships.
The FIVB Women’s World Championships is set to be hosted jointly by Netherlands and Poland from 23 September to October 15.
