First elected in 2021, Mutuku will serve the 11-member organization for another four years

National Olympic Committee of Kenya Secretary General Francis Mutuku was on Sunday 9 March re-elected as the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) Zone Five Secretary General in an elective assembly in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Mutuku, who first rose to the seat in May 2021, retained his position unopposed, and will now serve for another four-year term up to 2029.

“It’s a great privilege and honor to serve our 11 countries on Olympic activities,” Mutuku told Capital Sports after his reelection. “Our objective is to raise the standards of sports across all disciplines, to ensure we are well represented at the [prestigious Olympic Games.”

Dr. Donald Rukare of Uganda on the other hand took the ANOCA President seat after beating the incumbent - Ethiopia’s Ashebir Gayo - by eight votes to two.

Alice Umulinga meanwhile won the position of Vice President, with Tong Chor Malek Deran winning the post of Treasurer.

Joining the aforementioned winners in the ANOCA Executive Board will be Committee Members Salvator Bigirimana of Burundi, Michael Telkemichael Teweldebrhan of Eritrea, and Somalia’s Mohamed Adow Haji.

ANOCA brings together NOC’s of 11 African countries including: Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Sudan, Somalia, South Sudan, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Burundi and Egypt.

Mutuku, who was joined in Addis by NOC-K President Paul Tergat and Athlete Representative Humphrey Kayange, is also vying to become NOC-K President in the upcoming national polls in April.
