Sammy Mulama clinched the inaugural Altitude Golf Challenge at the par-72 Nyahururu Country Club this weekend, a feat that has emboldened the Golf Park ace ahead of the Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) finale in December.

Mulama conquered the par 72 Course known as the “Home of high altitude golf” with a sterling round total of +16 score of 232 gross after three rounds of 79,76, and 77, to claim the victory, playing at 7,800 ft. above sea level.

“This is incredible,” he told Golf News after his win. “Playing golf at high altitude like this is always a challenge. Playing under thin air needed a whole lot of skill, but a lot of patience and hard work finally paid off. The competition was fierce, which made this win all the more worth it, and indeed sweet. This is a dream come true.”

Despite the tough condition of the course, which, according to most players, was not ready to host a national event, Mulama beat leading amateur golfer John Lejirmah by two shots. His best placing in the series before this weekend was a second-place finish at the Gold Fields Trophy in Kakamega in June and at the Coast Open (Barry Cup) in Mombasa in July.

“I will skip the next event, the Uhuru Shield at Royal from 5 to 17 December, as I would like to travel to Mombasa early to prepare for the KAGC series grand finale (Nyali Open) from 12 to 14 December,” Mulama, who earned 100 points towards the series order of Merit, in addition to a Ksh115,000 payout, said.

Lejirma secured second place with +18, playing for a three-round score of 80,78,76 for a total of 234 gross, and was awarded Ksh69,400. Windsor’s Elvis Muigua and Karen Country Club’s Joseph Olwal tied for third place after each brought home 235 gross and were each rewarded Ksh40,400 for their efforts.

The inaugural championship featured 48 elite amateur golfers across the Country, all competing for a Ksh500,000 prize fund. The tournament’s challenging setup, combined with Nyahururu’s signature high-altitude conditions, delivered memorable performances, dramatic leaderboard shifts, and a strong showcase of Kenya’s rising golf talent.
