Mixed results for Kenyan schools in East Africa Games

Kenyan champions Wiyeta Girls' start their hunt for a fourth regional championship on Monday

Kenyan teams posted mixed results as the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Games entered day two on Sunday in Huye, Rwanda.

Basketball powerhouses Laiser Hill and Onjiko High, former rugby sevens national champions Vihiga and national football girls bronze medalist Madira Girls' were the only Kenyan sides that recorded victories on the second day of the competition.

Football Girls

Butere Girls started their hunt for maiden regional title on the wrong footing after losing 3-1 to two-time gold medalist Kawempe Muslims Secondary School of Uganda in a match played at Kamena grounds on Sunday morning.

The Red Commandos got the game underway through Diana Onyango in the 23rd minute but the lead lasted for only seven times as Agnes Nabukenya restored parity in the 30th minute

She doubled the lead for Kawempe a minute later to send the game into the break with Butere trailing 2-1.

The 2018 East Africa girls' champions onslaught over Commandos continued in the second half with Nakimera Sharifah 70th minute strike sealing the tie.

"We lacked our usual aggressiveness in front of goal and that cost us three points," said, Butere girls coach Edwin Sakwa.

Other Kenya representatives in girls football Friends School Madira had a bright start in the tournament after 3-1 win against the host GS Gatizo.

Football Kenya Federation Women Division One top scorer Valerie Nekesa opened the scoring in the 15th minute before Charity Midewa rounded up the scores with a brace to hand Fransic Muhambe’s charges maximum points.

Football Boys

Friends School Shanderema debut in East Africa games was one to forget as the Western region champions received a baptism of fire, falling 2-0 to Amus College of Uganda courtesy of Allan Oyirwoth’s brace.

Oyirwoth had the Uganda's ambassadors in front in the seventh minute converting from the spot, before capitalizing on a calamitous defensive error to slot home a second in the second half.

At University of Rwanda grounds, Kenya national football champions St Anthony's Boys Kitale played a ten-man College George Fox Kagarama to a barren draw.

Other Sports

In netball, newly-crowned national champions Oyugi Ogango from Homa Bay County kicked off their East Africa gold medal hunt with a close 44-39 win over Rutozo Secondary School from Tanzania.

Kenya Secondary School Sports Association (KSSSA) National basketball boys 3x3 champions Onjiko High School announced their arrival at the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) in style after winning their opening match.

Onjiko narrowly edged out Timbila 12-10 to complete a perfect debut.

In the ladies' 3x3 category, national champions Ototo Mixed Secondary from Homa Bay County failed to sparkle after going down to Ecole Ste Bernadette from Rwanda 18-11.

Butere Girls who finished runners-up in Kakamega last week were hammered 15-4 by Ssaku Secondary School from Uganda.

In basketball 5x5, national champions Laiser Hill announced their arrival in Rwanda by hammering Mbogo Secondary School from Uganda 72-69.
