Kenyan women basketball champions, Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), are camping in South Africa for an invitational tournament in preparation for the Zone Five Women's Basketball League Africa (WBLA) qualifiers.

KPA started their invitational tournament with a resounding 71-29 victory over Made By Basketball (MBB) at the historic Mendiville Sports Complex.

“We managed to stop their runs and played deep into their defense. With our blend of experienced and young players, we were able to control the game,” said head coach Anthony Ojukwu.

A second clash played on Friday, 3 October, saw KPA beat the Tshwane Suns 67-51.

Ojukwu’s charges are looking to make a comeback in the women’s continental club competition slated for Cairo, Egypt, later in December.

The Dockers missed out on last year’s final after finishing fourth in the Zone qualifiers held in Zanzibar, Tanzania.

For the first time since 2010, no Kenyan team played in the WBLA last year in Dakar, with KPA and Equity Bank Hawks falling short in the Zone Five Qualifiers, the former finishing fourth to miss out on a wild card that went to Rwandese silver medalist APR.

“The level of competition in the Zones has tremendously improved, and Kenyan teams will need to do more if they are to surmount this challenge and qualify next time.

Teams are recruiting heavily for these championships, and that's the level we need to match up,” Ojukwu told Mozzart Sport after missing out on a chance to be in Dakar.

This year, the defending champions are heading to Uganda, hoping to reclaim their Zone dominance.

They will be joined by reigning national silver medalists Zetech Sparks, who are expected to debut. The varsity side has previously forgone its opportunity to participate, citing financial constraints.

So far, FIBA Africa has confirmed the registration of hosts JKL Lady Dolphins and UCU Canons, Rwanda's APR, and Rwanda Energy Group (REG), Kenya's KPA, and Zetech Sparks, Burundian champions Gladiators and Les Hippos, as well as Tanzanian champions Don Bosco Lioness and Fox Divas.
