The just-concluded 2025 Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) League season delivered a defining statement from the lakeside, with Kisumu-based clubs capturing major titles across the various divisions and reinforcing the region’s return to elite competition.

At the summit, Butali Warriors reclaimed the Premier League men’s title from Kakamega-based side Western Jaguars, while Lakers Hockey Club dethroned previous champions Blazers Hockey Club to win the Premier League women’s crown.

In the second tier, Kisumu Youngstars secured the Super League men’s title and automatic promotion to the top flight. Meanwhile, Premier League debutants Kisumu Queens Hockey Club impressed in their maiden campaign, finishing fifth in the women’s top tier.

Collectively, the outcomes mark Kisumu’s strongest league showing in recent history.

Kisumu’s revival, however, extends beyond domestic competition.

In late January, Lakers delivered a landmark continental triumph, winning the Africa Cup for Club Champions in Harare, Zimbabwe. The victory marked Kenya’s first women’s club continental title in seven years.

The last Kenyan side to lift the trophy had been Telkom - now competing as Blazers at the 2018 edition in Abuja, Nigeria.

Lakers’ success, therefore, carried both symbolic and competitive significance. It restored Kenya’s presence at the summit of African club hockey while positioning Kisumu at the centre of that resurgence.

Winning domestically is one measure of dominance, while winning on the continent affirms depth, tactical maturity and squad balance against Africa’s elite.

For Kisumu, it represents validation that the region’s revival is not confined to league standings but extends to continental credibility.

Kisumu’s hockey narrative has historically swung back and forth between dominance and decline.

The city built its reputation through powerhouse school programs at institutions such as Kisumu Boys High School and Kisumu Day High School, producing generations of players who fed into the national teams and top clubs.

However, infrastructural challenges and reduced grassroots activity over the past two decades saw that influence wane, but the 2025 season suggests a recalibration.

Butali’s league triumph reflects a mature, high-performance setup that draws significantly from western Kenya’s traditional hockey belt. Their title win re-establishes the region’s imprint at the top of the men’s game.

On the women’s side, Lakers’ championship carries equal weight. The victory over Blazers, a club long associated with dominance in the women’s league, signals a competitive power shift and affirms the strength of Kisumu’s women’s hockey ecosystem.

Depth Beyond the Top Flight

Perhaps the clearest indicator of Kisumu’s revival lies beyond the Premier League podium.

Kisumu Youngstars’ Super League title and subsequent promotion ensure that the city will now have reinforced representation in the 2026 men’s Premier League season. Promotion is not merely symbolic; it demonstrates sustainability within the talent pipeline.

Equally significant is Kisumu Queens’ performance in their debut Premier League campaign. A fifth-place finish in the top tier reflects tactical organisation, competitive resilience and recruitment stability, essential markers for long-term survival at the elite level.

The convergence of success across men’s and women’s divisions suggests that Kisumu’s resurgence is systemic rather than isolated.

Kisumu’s revival has implications beyond club silverware; a competitive western region broadens the national selection base, enhances league parity and strengthens internal competition, which are key ingredients for elevating Kenya’s international prospects.

For the KHU, balanced regional growth strengthens the league product and restores historical rivalries that once defined Kenyan hockey’s golden eras.

The 2025 outcomes indicate that Kisumu has transitioned from being described as a “sleeping giant” to becoming an active force shaping league narratives once again.
