The women’s league had entered the second leg with only three of the 12 teams having played less than 11 matches.
As teams turn their focus on international duty, Kenya Handball Federation (KHF) has elected to take a two-month break from league action, with the league expected to resume in February 2023.
KHF Fixtures Secretary Charles Omondi, while confirming the development, said the decision has been reached after numerous requests from teams. The league that started in May has not had an official break.
“Teams taking part in the East and Central Africa Club championship in Zanzibar next month have requested to be given time to prepare for the same and while they are away we will have no action.
We also have universities and schools that have requested for a break as they approach their end year examinations and other school-related breaks so we saw it fit to have the break. We will regroup in mid-January and settle on a resumption date,” Omondi explained.
The women’s league had entered the second leg with only three of the 12 teams having played less than 11 matches. Newbies Daystar Falcons who began the leagues barely two months ago have played the least number of matches at nine with Amazon and Rising Stars having featured ten times.
Holders Nairobi Water Queens have played the highest number of matches at 14, keeping their unbeaten run going. Rivals National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) have played 13, won 11 while Ulinzi Sharks and Rangers have played 11 each and are placed third and fourth respectively.
NCPB men lead their league standings after a 15-match unbeaten run, heading to the break with only three matches left to the conclusion of the regular league.
Ulinzi HC, second on the log have played 14 as has Black Mamba while General Service Unit (GSU) and Strathmore University have played 13 and 12 matches respectively.
When the league resumes next year, teams will be looking to book tickets to the Super Cup, with the top four in the women’s league and top six for the men assured of a place in the highly-competitive post-season playoff.
