The league takes a break to pave way for the IHF youth championship set to conclude on Sunday 30 October.

Last season's Super Cup debutants Kenyatta University men's handball club have set their sights on finishing in a better place than they did then as the race for the championship intensifies.

Despite a losing weekend for the varsity side, coach Robert Osano maintains that the team is on course to go one better their sixth-place finish in the regular league that saw them take part in the Super Cup.

"We are going for nothing short of a Super Cup place. The beginning of our season has been good, but for the weekend loses, but we are still on course to make the top six and fight to finish the league in a better position," Osano said.

On the weekend, the side lost their second and third matches to holders National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) and Ulinzi HC on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Against the millers, Osano's charges lost 29-23 before going down to the military side 26-22 in a match they held the advantage for the better part of 50 minutes only to let it slip off in the last ten.

"We had tough matches this weekend but I am happy my players put up a spirited fight despite the tough opposition we were up against. I think the results against the top two teams are encouraging as we look to improve on our sixth-place finish from last season.

We still have work to do with our shooting being top priority. We missed some easy chances in the two matches and I think that contributed to our loss against Ulinzi on Sunday. We have to work on our wingers' shooting and our pivot as that will change our trajectory in upcoming matches," Osano added.

After Thursday's (Mashujaa Day) and weekend action, NCPB are still in the lead tied on 26 point with Ulinzi but with a superior goal difference.

Black Mamba and General Service Unit (GSU) are third and fourth on 20 points from 12 matches, having lost twice.

Varsity sides Strathmore and K.U hold fifth and sixth places ag 18 and 14 points respectively with Buccaneers breathing down K.U's neck at 14 points but having played two matches more.

Newbies Spartans remain winless and are at the bottom of the 19-team log after 11 matches with Young City in 18th place with two points same at Boomerang and Technical University of Kenya (TUK) who bagged their first win this weekend.
