NOC-K, for the second time in a space of two months, had been looking to finally hold its electoral congress, only for a Thursday morning decision by Justice Reuben Nyakundi to order the suspension of the polls.
The decision by the High Court in Eldoret came as a result of a petition from four members: Joycelene Nyambura, Francis Paul, Andrew Mudibo and the Kenya Table Tennis Association (KTTA), who were suing the body in charge of the elections (IEBC), Returning Officer Muthee Gakuru, NOC-K Returning Officer Salonika Ole Koyiet, Secretary General of Kenya Triathlon Federation Nderitu Gikaria, NOC-K, and Sports Registrar Rose Wasike.
Certifying the petition as urgent, Nyakundi ordered: "Pending hearing and determination of the application, a temporary injunction has been issued suspending the NOCK Executive Committee election scheduled to take place on 19.6.2025."
The decision, received shockingly by the members present at a Nairobi hotel, was the culmination of a week filled with controversy, and comes hours after KTTA Chair Mudibo had been barred from contesting the NOC-K Secretary General seat by the Sports Dispute Tribunal (SDT), for being a member of a "not duly registered sports organization" under the 2013 Sports Act.
The latest development now throws the Kenyan Olympic body into never-explored waters, even as an SDT warning that a normalisation Committee would take its place should the elections stall, looms large.
Hearing of the High Court petition is set for Monday, 23 June.
