Their first boxing night will be on Saturday 24 May at Nairobi's Charter Hall
Uganda boxing promotion company - 12 Sports Rounds - is aiming to “have an event like no other” when it opens the Kenyan market with a boxing night dubbed “Hakuna Mchezo 12 Rounds” on Saturday 24 May in Charter Hall, Nairobi.
12 Sports Rounds, under the ownership of Ugandan promoter Stephan Ssembuya, recently acquired a license from the Kenya Professional Boxing Commission (KPBC) to host fights in the country.
Starting off their pursuit to “have six events per year” will be a busy card in Nairobi, which is set to include boxers from Uganda, Kenya, Sweden and Malawi featuring in 11 non-title fights.
Speaking at the event launch, 12 Sports Rounds legal officer Joshua Sewankambo said: “We are happy to be here in Kenya and promise to have an event like no other.
Our company aims to have six events per year and hopefully three of them can be hosted here in Nairobi with an aim of promoting boxers from other countries too since Nairobi is ranked top among the cities across East and Central Africa."
One headliner already for the fight-night is Kenya’s Denzel Onyango, who last month made history as the first national boxer to feature at the inaugural Riyadh Season WBC Boxing Grand Prix in Saudi Arabia.
Joining him is expected to be a heavy contingent from Uganda (seven men and two women), who as per Sewankambo, will be cheered on by “three buses filled with boxing fans from Kampala.”
"The idea is to promote boxing and have as many bouts both locally and internationally for Kenyan boxers just like we did with the Riyadh Boxing Series that is set to commence again this August,” KPBC President Reuben Ndolo said. “More boxers from Kenya will be tried and tested as we also aim to recruit youngsters from grassroot level countrywide.”
Faisal Ashinda is the event's matchmaker, and will be joined by KPBC Deputy Secretary General Julius Odhiambo as the Inspector, while Stephen Gatonga and Morris Ndegwa will be the time keeper and doctor respectively.
