Nine Kenyan boxers have been knocked out in the championships first round
The worrying trend of Kenyan boxers dropping out of the first round of the IBA Women’s World Championships continued today as light middleweight pugilist Lorna Kusa was defeated by Colombian Vasquez Cortes Fernanda in Session 9A of the elite women’s fights in New Delhi, India.
The reigning Africa Zone Three gold medalist stumbled in the unanimous judges decision in favour of the Colombian (5-0), making her the ninth Kenyan to be knocked out of the prestigious championships in the first round.
The remaining two boxers in the tournament include two Olympians- Elizabeth Andiego and Christine Ongare, who became the first woman to win a bout in the World Championships since 2010.
Elizabeth Andiego on the other hand is already through to the quarter finals of the elite women’s heavyweight division. She will await the winner of the Round of 16 bout between Kazakhstan’s Sholtay Fariza and Trinidad and Tobago’s Boodram Leann.
In another result on Sunday, Kenyan Veronica Mbithe was stopped with 1:15 left in the second round by Colombia’s Valencia Victoria Ingrit in the opening bout of Session 7B on Sunday afternoon.
Attention will now shift to Ongare as she takes on Turkish international Erivan Barut in the minimum weight Round of 16 rounds.
For Africa, there have been 11 winners in the championships thus far, with a total 27 losses.
