Kenya set to host FIBA under-16 championship

Plans on training for the Kenyan sides will be released in due course.

Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) has been awarded the hosting rights for the FIBA Africa Zone Five Under-16 nations championship.

According to the zone's Secretary General Vitalis Gode, the event is set for 13 to 17 December at the Aga Khan Academy in Mombasa. 

The championship is expected to bring together girls and boys teams from Burundi, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda. 

"In compliance with conditions of participation clause 2.4 (c) on Financial Obligation, FIBA development office shall bare the cost of accommodation for girls' delegation only at a rate of usd 25 per day for a maximum of 15 persons for a maximum of 06 days payable directly to the host. 

Kindly confirm your participation on or before 3 October 2022," reads the circular letter sent to the participating nations. 

Meawhile, Kenya has commenced its recruitment process with the youth coaches that handled the Under-18 team that was set to compete in the Zone Five championship few weeks ago in charge. 

"We already have teams in the age group but the scouts will be out this and next week during the Kenya Secondary School Sport Association (KSSSA) games in search of more talented players that need to be given the chance. 

The team that has already been assembled is mainly from the Nairobi-based academies that host players from different schools in the country. We are confident of fielding strong sides come the competition," KBF Secretary General Ambrose Kisoi confirmed. 

Plans on training will be released in due course as the players in the age group are still in school and don't get off until after the third term expected to end in November according to the ministry of Education calendar.
