The Kakamega Barbarians were officially handed the slot after an ICT-driven verification process flagged widespread irregularities among participating teams.
The audit, conducted under the office of the KSSSA Secretary General, found 22 players from Bungoma High School ineligible, the highest number recorded in the exercise.
This, in turn, led to the team’s disqualification.
Confirmation of Kakamega’s participation was issued on Sunday, 5 April, with the school receiving formal communication clearing them to compete.
The team is expected to travel to Kisumu immediately to take up its place in the national showpiece.
The late development has injected both excitement and controversy into the build-up to the games.
Kakamega High School, through its official Facebook page, acknowledged receipt of the communication and affirmed its readiness to represent the region on the national stage.
The disqualification of Bungoma High School has, however, sparked unrest, with reports indicating that the institution is preparing to lodge an official protest challenging the outcome of the audit.
This episode underscores growing efforts by the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association to tighten compliance in school sports, with digital eligibility checks increasingly being used to uphold fairness ahead of major tournaments.
The KSSSA National Games are set to kick off in Kisumu, now with Kakamega High School stepping in as Western Region’s rugby representatives in a dramatic late twist to the competition.
